About the SWSA RTI Race

Our mid-summer SWSA Round the Island race gives sailors of all abilities the chance to experience a longer race.  All within sight of land it takes in the views of the Isle of Wight.  Your challenge is to utilise your best tidal tactics to steal a march on your competitors.  The wreck of the Varvassi and Goose Rock are obstacles to be avoided off the Needles so the book Wight Hazards by Peter Bruce is a useful companion for this race.

The start at Bald Head  makes it convenient for Southampton Water and Hamble River based boats.

Competitors may try single-handed, with a family crew, or even picking up keen SWSA or RYA volunteer crew.

A sense of achievement

A long but rewarding day for skippers and crews, with a pint to look forward to – at the end of this alternative Round the Island race some boats choose to finish with an evening in Cowes or another location if the finish is elsewhere.  See SIs for details of finish.
